Developer update — October 11, 2026. Cloudflare and Deno announced on October 9 that the Deno team is joining Cloudflare. TechCrunch published follow-up coverage on October 10. Beyond the acquisition, the official Deno announcement sets out important timelines for the JavaScript runtime, Deno Deploy and the JSR package registry.

What is Cloudflare doing with Deno?

The companies plan to combine ideas from Deno's celld project and Cloudflare's open-source workerd runtime. Their stated goal is to make the Workers programming model and Durable Objects easier to use on self-hosted infrastructure, not only on Cloudflare's global network.

What happens to the Deno runtime?

Ryan Dahl's official announcement says Deno will receive monthly bug-fix and security updates for another year. After that period, company-led development of the Deno runtime will end. The runtime will remain open source, so community development may continue.

When will Deno Deploy shut down?

Deno says Deno Deploy will continue operating for six months before shutdown, with migration assistance for paying customers moving to Cloudflare Workers. Teams relying on Deno Deploy should review their hosting architecture and plan a tested migration rather than waiting until the final weeks.

What happens to JSR?

The JSR registry is expected to continue operating, with its infrastructure moving to Cloudflare. It is incorrect to assume that the registry is shutting down alongside Deno Deploy.

What should JavaScript and TypeScript developers do?

  1. Inventory applications using Deno, Deno Deploy and JSR.
  2. Record the one-year runtime maintenance window and six-month Deploy timeline.
  3. Test alternative deployment environments and compatibility requirements.
  4. Review storage bindings, secrets, scheduled jobs and persistent state.
  5. Follow official updates on celld and workerd integration before assuming full portability.

Why Durable Objects matter

Durable Objects combine addressable application state with a programming model suited to real-time services. Cloudflare and Deno want to make these distributed application primitives easier to operate beyond a single managed provider. That is a development roadmap, not an announcement that all features are immediately available for self-hosting.
